Houston vacation rental market

What drives group travel here, when it peaks, and the local rules an owner or investor needs to know.

Quick answer

Houston is a big-event market. NRG Stadium, the rodeo, the medical center, college bowl games and the marathon bring groups year-round, and the city's size keeps demand steady between events. Since January 1, 2026, every short-term rental in the City of Houston must register each year for $275 plus an administrative fee, and pay hotel occupancy taxes.

The Texas Medical Center

Families supporting a patient often need a home for weeks, with a kitchen and space for relatives.

Family and faith events

What works for group homes

Five-bedroom homes with parking and a pool do well. Homes within 30 minutes of NRG Park earn the most on event weekends. Strict house rules and noise monitoring matter: the city added its ordinance after problems with party houses.

Permits and taxes

City registration

Houston's short-term rental ordinance took full effect on January 1, 2026. Each rental must register annually for $275 plus the city's administrative fee. Platforms must delist unregistered rentals by January 1, 2027.

Hotel occupancy tax

Operators must be registered to pay hotel occupancy taxes. State, city and county hotel taxes together come to about 17%.

Outside city limits

Sugar Land, Cypress and other suburbs fall under different cities or Harris and Fort Bend counties. Check which rules apply to the address.

What to watch

  • The city enforces the ordinance actively, with daily fines for violations.
  • Hurricane season raises insurance costs and can cancel summer bookings.
  • Event weekends drive a large share of revenue.
