How we chose these restaurants

Every restaurant here lists a private room, a group table or large-party booking on its own website, checked on November 6, 2026.

We left out places we could not confirm on their own sites that day, including some well-known names. Room sizes, minimum spends and hours below are what each restaurant's site listed when we checked. They change, so confirm the details with the restaurant before you book, and check the current price on their site or with the events team.

The best rooms for 12 to 20 people

For a group of 12 to 20, look for a room with one long table, so the whole family or wedding party can talk across it.

Ella Dining Room & Bar (downtown). Ella has more room options than any restaurant on this list. Its private dining page lists a Board Room for up to 14 seated, a Capitol Room for up to 20 at two tables of 10, a Friends & Family Table for up to 16, and two Chef's Tables for up to 13 each, or 26 with both. The site describes Ella as just blocks from the Convention Center, the State Capitol and Golden 1 Center, so it suits a dinner before a show or game.

Il Fornaio (downtown). The Bologna room seats 12 to 15 at one cherry wood table at the back of the Loggia, and Sala del Vino, the wine room, seats up to 25. For an Italian dinner where the platters go down the middle of the table, it is one of the easiest bookings for a family.

The Firehouse (Old Sacramento). The Firehouse lists two wine cellar rooms: Wine Cellar 1 for up to 16 and Wine Cellar 2 for up to 28 seated, or up to 40 with both. It sits in Old Sacramento, so a group can walk the waterfront before dinner.

The best rooms for 20 to 60 people

For a bigger event such as a rehearsal dinner or a reunion night out, look at rooms built for 30 or more with their own entrance or a separate area.

Zinfandel Grille (east of downtown). Its fully private Z Room seats up to 60 and has its own entrance, a fireplace and AV equipment. The semi-private Wine Room seats up to 100, and groups of 21 to 100 can reserve it online Sunday through Thursday. The site lists a $500 deposit for online reservations, credited to the bill. It lists lunch on weekdays from 11am to 2:30pm and dinner daily from 4pm to 9pm.

Zócalo (Midtown). The Midtown Morelia Room is private and holds up to 62 guests, with a TV and separate audio. Zócalo lists a minimum spend of $1,000 to $3,000 for a two-hour event there. Its indoor and outdoor celebration tables take up to 20 each, with every guest ordering an entrée.

Paesanos (Midtown). The Portofino Room is a private dining space in Midtown's Handle District for up to 40 guests, with its own full bar. The menu works for a group with kids, picky eaters and adults who want a proper dinner.

Ella and The Firehouse. For 26 to 40, Ella's Grand Capitol Room seats up to 26 at one table or up to 40 at four tables. For a big wedding-weekend dinner, The Firehouse's Golden Eagle Room holds up to 110, and its Courtyard holds up to 250.

Casual group dinners without a private room

Not every group dinner needs a room of its own; some of the best nights are a long table in a busy dining room.

Frank Fat's (downtown) is a Sacramento standby for a big shared Chinese dinner. Its reservations page says online bookings go up to four people and larger groups should call. It also says the restaurant seats a party only when everyone has arrived, so set a meeting time 15 minutes before the reservation.

Echo & Rig (downtown) sits inside the Kimpton Sawyer hotel, a short walk from Golden 1 Center. Its site lists dinner daily from 4pm and weekend brunch on Saturday and Sunday, with a page for booking group events.

Zócalo's other locations suit a group staying outside downtown. It has private rooms at University Village, Roseville and Folsom too, such as the La Roma Room in Roseville for up to 20 and the La Condesa Room in Folsom for up to 42. If your group is staying in Roseville, that saves the drive into the city.

How to book a table for a big group

The groups that eat well in Sacramento book early, send one point of contact and order family-style.

  1. Pick a date and a headcount range before you call, such as "Saturday the 14th, 16 to 18 people."
  2. Ask about private rooms first. They book before the main dining room fills.
  3. Use the event form or the phone, not a standard online booking. Most sites above route parties of 12 or more to an events team.
  4. Ask about a set or family-style menu. It speeds up service, makes the cost predictable and makes splitting the bill easier.
  5. Confirm the details in writing: the room, the minimum spend, the deposit, the cancellation deadline and the final headcount date.
  6. Agree on payment before the night. One card and a payback through a shared app is easier than 16 separate checks. Our guide to splitting costs on a group trip has a simple method.

Book further ahead for nights when downtown is busy, such as Kings games and big concerts. Our What's on in Sacramento page lists upcoming events, so you can see which nights to avoid or plan around.

Eat out once, eat in the rest

For a stay of several nights, most large groups do best with one or two restaurant dinners and the other nights at the house.

A dinner for 16 in a private room is a real event and worth doing for a birthday, a rehearsal dinner or the first night of a reunion. Doing it every night costs a lot and tires out children and grandparents. A home with a big kitchen and outdoor dining gives you the other nights for a barbecue or a cooked dinner around one table.

The seven-bedroom Sacramento House sleeps up to 16 on gated one-acre grounds, with an outdoor dining area and a BBQ grill. The bottom line

For 12 to 20 people, book a room with one long table at Ella, Il Fornaio or The Firehouse. For 20 to 60, look at Zinfandel Grille, Zócalo's Morelia Room or the Portofino Room at Paesanos. Book through the events team two to four weeks ahead, confirm the minimum spend and deposit in writing, and plan one or two big dinners out with the other nights at the house.

Frequently asked questions

Which Sacramento restaurants have private rooms for large groups?

Ella Dining Room & Bar and Il Fornaio downtown, The Firehouse in Old Sacramento, Paesanos and Zócalo in Midtown, and Zinfandel Grille east of downtown all list private or semi-private rooms on their own sites, with seats for 12 or more.

How far ahead should we book a restaurant for 15 people in Sacramento?

Two to four weeks is a good rule, and longer for Friday and Saturday nights in the holiday season or during big events downtown. Private rooms book first, so ask about them before anything else.

Can I book a table for 12 online?

Sometimes. Zinfandel Grille lets groups book online, with its Wine Room open to online bookings for 21 to 100 guests Sunday through Thursday. Frank Fat's takes online reservations only up to four people and asks larger groups to call. Most private rooms go through an event form or the events team.

What is a minimum spend?

It is the amount the group must spend on food and drinks to use a private room. If the bill comes in under it, you pay the difference. Zócalo, for example, lists minimum spends by room on its large-party page. Ask whether tax and gratuity count toward it.

Is there a good place for a big group near the Sacramento arena?

Ella Dining Room & Bar describes itself as blocks from the Convention Center, State Capitol and Golden 1 Center, and Echo & Rig is downtown inside the Kimpton Sawyer hotel and takes group event bookings.

Do restaurants charge a service fee for large parties?

Many add an automatic gratuity or service charge for large parties. Policies differ by restaurant, so ask when you book and read the event contract before you sign.
