By the JekkyStay team · November 3, 2026
- Fredericksburg is one of the closest historic towns to Lake Anna.
- Charlottesville and Monticello make a full day for history lovers.
- Richmond offers museums, food and the James River.
- Washington, DC is possible as a long day, but traffic varies widely.
Lake Anna is a great place to slow down, but one of its advantages is location. Several of Virginia's most interesting towns and historic sites are within an easy drive. Here are the best day trips for a group staying at the lake. Drive times are approximate and depend on where on the lake you start.
Fredericksburg
Fredericksburg has a walkable historic downtown with shops, restaurants and the Rappahannock River. The Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park protects several Civil War battlefields in the area. It is one of the closest towns to the lake, so it works for a half-day as well as a full one.
Charlottesville and Monticello
Charlottesville is home to the University of Virginia and its historic Lawn, and the pedestrian Downtown Mall is lined with restaurants. Nearby Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's home, offers guided tours; book ahead for a group. The drive passes through rolling country with many wineries.
Richmond
Virginia's capital has museums, including the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Virginia Museum of History and Culture and the Science Museum of Virginia. The James River runs through the city, with trails and parks along its banks. Richmond's food scene makes it a good place for a group dinner out.
Montpelier
James Madison's Montpelier, in Orange County, is a quieter historic visit with house tours, exhibits on Madison and the enslaved community who lived there, and walking trails. It is a shorter drive from the lake than Charlottesville.
Kings Dominion
For a group with teenagers, the Kings Dominion amusement park in Doswell is a manageable drive. Check the park's operating calendar, since it is seasonal.
Wineries
Central Virginia has many wineries. Pick one or two for a relaxed afternoon, book tastings for large groups, and plan a designated driver.
Washington, DC
DC is possible as a long day trip, but traffic on the routes north can be heavy. If you go, leave early, consider parking at a Metro station outside the city and pick a few sights rather than trying to see everything.
Tips for day trips
- Pick one destination per day. Combining two adds driving time.
- Book tours ahead for Monticello and other popular sites.
- Leave someone at the house if not everyone wants to go; a lake day is a fine alternative.
- Pack snacks and water for the car.
- Check opening days and hours. Many historic sites have seasonal schedules and close on certain weekdays.
